The Pitmen Painters

On friday I went to Theatre Royal in Bath to see the Pitmen Painters. It was hugely enjoyable, for anyone that has an interest in modern art and British history during the thirties and forties it is an absolute must see.

The play is based on a true story of a group of Pitmen who started to attend art classes to broaden their horizons and found that they had a real talent for debating, appreciating and producing artwork. The play was written by Lee Hall and is quite literally hilarious. The consequences of five pitmen scaling the art ladder is a funny thought in itself but the constant, beautifully written, debates about the worth and meaning of art between the men prove to be very funny. The play is still touring and If you get the chance to see it I am sure you will have an enjoyable evening.
